ROAD SAFETY EDUCATION HAS BEEN WELCOMED BY LEARNERS AS THE DEPARTMENT OBSERVED UN GLOBAL ROD SAFETY WEEK

The pupils of Perfferville Primary School in East London have welcomed the roads safety activation / education conducted in their school by the Eastern Cape Department of Transport as part of the 6th annual United Nations (UN) Global rod safety week Campaign on 21 May 2021.

The 12-year-old Rorbeto Wieberto, who is doing Grade 5 and who is part of the scholar patrol programme expressed his delight after the session and said that he was happy as he got more information about road safety that he will share with other learners during the scholar patrol.

Asked what he learned on the day, Wieberto said: “I have learnt about the color of clothes I should wear to be visible on the road, the meaning of the colors of robots and those things will help me to look clever and be able to help the younger school kids on the road.”

His sentiments were echoed by another 11-year-old Grade 5 pupil, Zusakhe Anam as she said, “as I walk to school, I have learnt that before I cross I have to look on both sides of the road and only cross when there are no cars coming, then it will be safe for me to cross. I will also teach my siblings at home about what I have learnt today.”

The day was full of activities as it kicked off in the early hours of the morning with the roadblock operation in partnership with Buffalo City Metro law Enforcement at very busy intersections in Buffalo city metro near Pefferville Primary School with an intention to educate the drivers on the importance of reducing speed as it has been identified as the number one factor of road fatalities and severe injuries on our roads, affecting pedestrians and passengers in most cases.

“We wanted to send out a clear message to the motorists that they should at all times be aware of the high speed that they tend to use when driving in that area as their habit becomes a barrier for the school children and the community when crossing,” said the Departmental Head of Communications, Khuselwa Rantjie.

Another important activation also took place later on the day at Buffalo City TVET College, 17 students held a road safety debated under the topic “Defensive Driving” focusing on
